Abstract

Hospital buildings are often considered the most energy inefficient public buildings in most developed countries. As they have the highest energy consumption per unit area, they become excellent targets for cost savings and for the incorporation of energy efficiency strategies. This work presents a methodology based on a multi-criteria approach aimed at evaluating building recycling strategies based on technological proposals that consider technical and economic qualities within the framework (of the guidelines) of passive design. This approach requires a prior diagnosis of the basic technological-construction situation of the built building, and the identification of design variables with a greater impact on energy savings and improvement of habitability both in the entire establishment as well as in their specific areas. Once the technical and economic aspects linked to the energy efficiency of the envelope have been evaluated, the different technological-construction proposals are compared for its improvement using the concept of Pareto dominance. If more than one optimal improvement proposal is obtained as a result, it is possible to incorporate the opinion of different actors to finally decide the most convenient one. The methodology presented is then applied to support decision-making to improve the energy efficiency of the envelope of a building in the health sector, but it could also be applied to buildings in other sectors (e.g., residential, commercial, etc.). The results obtained show that the systematized recycling of existing buildings, based on technological proposals, supported by a multi-criteria selection methodology that allows evaluating their technical and economic qualities, represents a viable alternative to intervene in the envelope of buildings and their constructive systems.
