Abstract

This study explores the complex interplay between time and space in the context of post-disaster reconstruction and introduces a novel perspective that transcends the traditional static conceptions associated with architecture and urban planning. Through a multiscale analysis integrating temporal dimensions (memory, observation, and projection) with spatial scales ranging from individual
buildings to the broader urban fabric, results show that
reconstruction is not merely a physical rebuilding process
but also an act of resignifying and reinterpreting time and
space. The concept of “zero time” is introduced as a moment of stasis preceding reconstruction, while “movement” is analyzed as a metaphor for the journey toward a renewed spatial and social harmony. This article highlights the mutual influence between reconstruction practices and individuals’ temporal and spatial perceptions and suggests planning approaches that value temporality and spatial flexibility. Contributing to the urban resilience debate, this research provides insights for sustainable, inclusive, and community-rooted post-disaster reconstruction approaches. Daniele Rocchio, UTE University, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, Architecture Department, LL Liminal Lab investigation group

Daniele Rocchio es un arquitecto, urbanista y master en eficiencia energética y energías renovables por la Università Sapienza di Roma. Ph.D en Arquitectura, edificación, urbanismo y paisaje por la Universitat Politècnica de València. Es el arquitecto responsable del servicio de prevención y protección de la Embajada de Italia in Quito. Desde el 2014 es docente titular de Arquitectura de la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad UTE en Ecuador, donde ocupa la posición de Decano desde el 2018. Su campo de investigación se enfoca en los procesos dinámicos de reconstrucción post-catástrofe.

Débora Domingo-Calabuig, Universitat Politècnica de València

Débora Domingo-Calabuig se graduó en arquitectura tras sus estudios en la Escuela de Arquitectura de Valencia (España) y en l’École d’Architecture de Paris-La Défense (Francia). En 2005 obtuvo su doctorado en la Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). Se unió al Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos de la UPV como profesora asistente en el año 2000 y actualmente es profesora titular. Su investigación se centra en la consideración social en la arquitectura y el diseño urbano, particularmente en los contextos de posguerra de Europa Occidental en las décadas de 1960 y 1970, en relación con los cambios en la educación superior y la planificación de nuevos campus. Es vicerrectora de Desarrollo Sostenible del Campus en la Universitat Politècnica de València.

Majid Khorami, UTE University, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, Architecture Department, LL Liminal Lab investigation group

Ingeniero Civil y PhD de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, España. Profesor en la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad UTE, con más de 15 años en docencia e investigación. Actual Coordinador de Investigación y Editor en Jefe de la revista Eidos. Autor de más de 50 artículos en revistas de alto impacto y revisor en más de 8 revistas especializadas en Ingeniería Civil.

Sebastian Narvaez-Purtschert, UTE University, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, Architecture Department, LL Liminal Lab investigation group

Actualmente se desempeña como coordinador académico en la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo en la Universidad UTE. Estudiante de doctorado en la UPV en Valencia, su campo de estudio se centra en la apropiación de espacios e interacción social espontánea en contextos de vulnerabilidad, con un énfasis particular en el concepto de Umbral como espacio de transición. Se graduó como arquitecto en Suiza (SUPSI) y tiene una Maestría en Diseño Arquitectónico y Urbano en la USI (Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio). Trabaja como arquitecto independiente, especializado en diseño contextual y enfocado en el ser humano. Participa constantemente en concursos de arquitectura en los cuales ha recibido importantes reconocimientos.

Adrián Patricio Beltrán Montalvo, Professor, UTE University, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, Architecture Department, LL Liminal Lab investigation group, Calle Rumipamba S/N and Bourgeois.

Director de la carrera de Arquitectura y docente principal en la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad UTE (Quito-Ecuador). Actualmente es estudiante del Doctorado en Diseño de la Universidad de Palermo (Buenos Aires-Argentina).Tiene una Maestría en Arquitectura con mención en Sociedad y Cultura por la Melbourne University (Melbourne - Australia). Cuenta también con estudios en ilustración y en diseño con realidad virtual en la Architectural Association (Londres- Inglaterra). Ejerce como arquitecto e ilustrador desde 2012. Sus áreas de trabajo e investigación se enfocan en la gráfica arquitectónica y la atmósfera espacial. En los últimos años sus propuestas arquitectónicas e ilustraciones han sido galardonadas a nivel mundial por plataformas e instituciones como NonArchitecture, Library Illustrazioni, Archihacks y la Bienal Panamericana de Arquitectura de Quito.
