Are you interested in publishing in the journal? We recommend reviewing the pages About the Journal and Author Guidelines, where you can find all the necessary information for manuscript submission, as well as the different phases of the editorial process.
Furthermore, we provide below some resources that we believe will be of interest to authors when submitting articles:
Normally, articles in Cuadernos de Investigación Educativa require in-text citations. These citations are used to present ideas, results, data, arguments and examples, to further explore or expand on the discussed topic, as well as to provide readers with the necessary information to locate the cited sources.
All statements made in the text must be supported by citations or by one's own work. Proper citation is important to distinguish between one's own opinions and results from those of others. It is also a way to acknowledge the contributions of others.
There are pre-established citation styles that are generally associated with different areas of knowledge. Cuadernos de Investigación Educativa follows the style developed by the latest American Psychological Association (APA) Manual edition.
In order to paraphrase an author or research, it is necessary to give credit to the source that originated it. For in-text citations, APA guidelines state that the author's last name and the year of publication of the work should be included. For example:
Every innovation requires time for the transformation or modification of teachers' conceptions, attitudes, methods, and interventions in order to improve teaching and learning processes (Carbonell, 2002).
In the case of including words, phrases, or ideas that are not one's own, they should be specified within quotation marks (unless they exceed 40 words). Therefore, the page number should be included when it is a direct quotation, in addition to the author's last name and year. For example:
The use of ICT represents an important aspect of invisible learning, as “technologies used in formal education seem to stimulate the development of non-visible learning” (Cobo, 2011, p. 1).
If the author's last name is part of the narrative, only the year of publication should be included in parentheses:
As Najmanovich (2005) argues, opening up thinking implies embracing changes as true transformations. Materials change, they have no limits on paper, and there is immense space for creativity.
In cases where the author's last name and date are part of the sentence, they should not be specified within parentheses, like this:
The work of Sparrow, conducted in 2011, is particularly helpful in relation to the effects of Google on memory.
When a work has two authors, both last names are always cited (whenever the reference occurs in the text):
Authors such as Marcelo and Vaillant (2009) propose that schools should create spaces where teachers not only teach but also have the opportunity to learn, whether from their students, colleagues, or professional development courses.
When dealing with a work with three or more authors, starting from the first citation, it is sufficient to detail the last name of the first author, followed by "et al." (which means "and others" in Latin). For example:
Furthermore, the effects of technology can occur when collaboration with the technique leaves a cognitive residue, endowing individuals with thinking skills and strategies that reorganize and enhance their performance (Salomon et al., 1992).
In the case of citing two or more works by different authors, the last names should be written in alphabetical order, with their respective publication years (separated by semicolons within the same parentheses):
The importance of this factor is highlighted in various studies conducted in Uruguay (ANEP, 2020; UNESCO, 2021; Vaillant, 2023).
For works by the same author that also have the same publication date, a letter should be assigned after the year: a, b, c, and so on:
Several studies (ANEP, 2020a, 2020b) established that the use of technology...
Some important data to consider:
- As a rule, APA recommends citing original sources. Only in exceptional cases should secondary sources be cited. For example, when an original work is no longer in print or when it is not available in the language.
- It is important for authors to be aware that presenting their own previously published work as new research can be considered self-plagiarism if not properly cited.
- When including quotations of fewer than 40 words, they are incorporated into the text, enclosed in quotation marks.
- If the quotation is 40 words or longer, it should be displayed in a separate block of text, without quotation marks and without italics. The quotation should begin on a new line, with a 1.25 centimeter hanging indent from the left margin. In this case, remember to add a period before the parentheses containing the author's information, publication year, and page number. For example:
The analysis of the educational landscape in Latin America reveals different stages in the professional development, career, and evaluation of teachers. While it is possible to assume that improving teachers' professional conditions in some countries is feasible with political determination, the situation in others is more complex and requires greater attention. (Vaillant & Aguerrondo, 2015, p. 47)
All sources cited in the text should appear in the "References" section. While APA allows the inclusion of works that have not been cited in the text, Cuadernos de Investigación Educativa specifies that only the sources mentioned in the manuscript should be included.
Each type of reference should include a series of necessary information to identify the work, such as author, title of the work, publication date, pagination and publisher, among others. To ensure correct formatting, all required information should be provided according to the reference type.
