Mediatización: reencuadrando el análisis de los efectos de los medios

La investigación sobre mediatización comparte la ambición de los estudios relativos a los efectos de los medios, de responder a las difíciles preguntas que refieren a sí y a cómo los medios importan e influencian en la cultura y la sociedad contemporánea. Los dos enfoques sin embargo difieren fundamentalmente en que la investigación sobre mediatización responde a estas preguntas generales mediante la distinción entre dos conceptos: mediación y mediatización. La tradición en cuanto a los efectos de los medios generalmente considera a estos efectos como el resultado de que los individuos estén expuestos al contenido de los medios (por ejemplo, los efectos son vistos como el resultado de la comunicación mediada). La investigación sobre mediatización se preocupa de los cambios estructurales de largo plazo que involucran a los medios, la cultura y la sociedad (por ejemplo, la influencia de los medios es entendida en relación a cómo los medios están implicados en los cambios sociales y culturales y a cómo estos procesos llegan a crear nuevas condiciones para la comunicación e interacción humanas). Desde la perspectiva de la investigación en mediatización, el efecto más importante de los medios deriva de su inserción en la cultura y la sociedad.
