We are pleased to inform that the call for papers is open to publish articles and/or reviews in the Volume 19 / Nº1 (January-June 2023) of InMediaciones de la Comunicación, academic journal published since 1998 by Universidad ORT Uruguay.

The purpose is focused on the publication of original and unpublished articles and/or reviews and the dissemination of interviews, essays and research reports that take place in the field of communication and its related disciplines, with special attention to the processes of social mediatization and the study of contemporary media phenomena. Its content is aimed at researchers, professors, undergraduate and postgraduate students and people with an interest in all areas of communication. Before publication, the manuscripts are reviewed, in the first instance, by the Associate Editors and the Academic Committee, made up of experts from different countries, the Guest Editor of each number, and then they are evaluated through the double-blind system with the intervention of external referees.

The journal carries out an open access policy, receives contributions written in Spanish, English and Portuguese and the authors do not have to pay any cost for the processing or publication of the manuscripts. InMediaciones de la Comunicación is published in digital format and carries out an editorial policy that conforms to international standards for academic journals. From the beginning, Inmediaciones de la Comunicación assumed the commitment to stimulate the open publication of manuscripts derived from quality research and promoted the approach of the most diverse topics and problems that cross the field of communication. Over the years, it has had the contribution of researchers and academic referents with a recognized professional track record, who provide their views on the debates raised by the permanent renewal of the communication phenomena in Latin America and the world.

THEMATIC OF VOLUME 19 / N° 1 (JANUARY-JUNE 2024)
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES AND COMMUNICATION
Processes, questions and challenges

Fundamentals of the Call

Digital technologies and communication processes is a binomial that has always caused talk. A pairing that in our time requires further thought, seeking that the theoretical richness of ongoing research and the critical analysis of the specific phenomena going through our context promote a broader understanding of the world in which we live and the challenges that lie ahead. This number of InMediaciones de la Comunicación aims to open the analysis and the interrelationship –in a broad sense– between the various forms of technologies and communication processes with the purpose of contributing reflections that serve to continue thinking about their complexity.

Since the pandemic unleashed in 2020, the relationship between digital technologies and communication processes intensified, changed, and became trapped in unprecedented situations, never experienced before. Thus, the relationship between the technological and the communicational increased the debates and led to the reconsideration of the concepts used to think about reality, the ways of building knowledge and the effects of digital literacy policies in the most diverse fields. In this way, certain "truths" that seemed to be out of the question were once again put under the "magnifying glass" and the need to find new tools - theoretical and methodological - was raised to reflect on digital technologies and communication processes in a historically atypical situation. Technology ended up going through our daily lives and made communication processes acquire vital relevance, in addition to exposing and making visible the scope, limits and existing challenges in terms of access and use of digital technologies –those that “supposedly” responded to all the issues-. Several imaginaries built in relation to digital technologies and communication processes began to fall before a reality that "entered" with all its weight and projected different types of demands from the different actors and in the most diverse spheres of social life: educational, social, political, cultural. Hence the need to analyze, once again, from a relativist epistemological perspective, the link between digital technologies and communication processes in order to fully recognize the practices of use, the different types of appropriations, the implications of what has took place and unfolds with the dizziness of the contemporary world.

Within this general framework, the call invites the submission of papers that analyze the link between digital technologies and communication from a critical perspective, retaking the notion of power, considering the multiplicity of aspects that cross it and formulating questions that promote reflection about an always complex bond. What factors cross and constitute the current relationship between digital technologies and the contemporary communication processes?, What are the epistemological, theoretical and methodological criteria that can help us rethink the place of the technological and the communicational in the different spheres of social life?, What tools, what data, what categories of analysis are needed to make its complexity intelligible?, What rights and obligations does cognitive capitalism impose on us as users?, What are the particular features that this relationship acquires in our context?, How do they intertwine and build imaginaries about the practices of use of digital technologies and the construction of knowledge?, How to intervene in the debate on digital literacy processes?, What are the theoretical challenges, but also political ones, that open up in relation to this topic?

InMediaciones de la Comunicación invites you to submit manuscripts that are the result of research, case analysis and/or systematization of experiences that address –in and from communication– the deep concerns and mutations of the relationship between digital technologies and communication processes in today's society: the construction of knowledge through the use of digital technologies; access to the different screens and their confidentiality and privacy conditions; digital social networks and the need to “educate” about data management and software options; access to digital information as a form of political participation and construction of digital citizenship; the right to information as a way of social inclusion; digital technologies, communication processes and the role of education as a fundamental resource for democratization; public policies –or their absence– for digital literacy; the tensions and challenges around access to digital sources of information, digital archives and open educational resources, among other issues and problems.
